If 1 in 5 Australians lives with disability, who are we still designing for
Back in 2022, the ABS told us that 5.5 million Australians — 1 in 5 — were living with disability. That was already a wake-up call after two decades of relative stability.
Three years on, the numbers tell us the trend hasn't slowed. It's accelerated.
More people supported. More funding committed. And yet — nearly 10,000 Australians approved for Specialist Disability Accommodation still can't find a home that meets their needs.
The pipeline is growing, but the built environment is still playing catch-up. Supply mismatches, location gaps, and design that doesn't reflect how people actually live are the real barriers now.
Demand doesn't wait for supply to catch up. People do — in hospital wards, in aged care, in homes that were never designed for them.
This is why getting the design right from the start — not retrofitting at the end — matters more than ever. Accessible, inclusive design isn't a compliance exercise. It's a direct response to where Australia's population is heading.
The 2022 data was a signal. 2026 is the proof.
